Oshoala's Dominance in Saudi Women's Premier League
Asisat Oshoala ripped through the Saudi Women’s Premier League at the weekend, leading a wave of standout performances from Nigerian players abroad.
The six-time African Player of the Year produced a staggering two goals and four assists as Al Hilal demolished Al Ahli 9–0, a statement win that doubled as the club’s first league victory of the season.
Oshoala runs the show
From the opening minutes, Oshoala dictated everything.
She teed up Manar Al-Anzi in the fourth minute to open the floodgates, then turned provider again and again, feeding Al-Bandari Mubarak for goals in the 20th, 22nd and 30th minutes. Four assists before the interval, each one a reminder of her vision and timing.
Then she joined the party on the scoresheet.
Oshoala struck in the 45th minute to cap a ruthless first half, and added her second after the break to complete a performance that looked more like a personal highlight reel than a routine league outing. Fellow Nigerian Christy Ucheibe also featured in the emphatic win as Al Hilal finally got their season up and running in style.
Plumptre on target in Saudi derby clash
In another eye-catching display in Saudi Arabia, Ashleigh Plumptre stepped up for Al Ittihad in a high-profile clash with Al Nassr.
The Super Falcons defender opened the scoring from the penalty spot, setting the tone for a 4–2 victory that kept Al Ittihad perfect with two wins from two. A centre-back taking responsibility from 12 yards in a pressure game says plenty about her growing influence at the club.
Impact off the bench in Turkey
Across the water in Turkey, Suliat Abideen made sure her name was on the weekend’s roll of honour.
Introduced in the 57th minute for Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Women’s Super League, the Nigerian forward added the gloss in a 3–0 win over Beşiktaş. She struck in the 84th minute to make it three, finishing off a move created by compatriot Regina Otu, as Fenerbahçe preserved their flawless start to the campaign.
A brief cameo, but a decisive one.
Late drama from Hembafan
The drama did not end there for Nigerian players in Turkey.
Ayatsea Hembafan salvaged a precious point for Kayseri KFK with a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1–1 draw away to Yüksekovaspor. After Princella Adubea had put the hosts ahead in the 70th minute, Kayseri looked set to leave empty-handed.
Hembafan had other ideas.
Deep into added time, in the fourth minute of stoppage, she found the leveller, turning a looming defeat into a result that could prove vital over the course of the season.
From Oshoala’s masterclass in Riyadh to Hembafan’s last-gasp rescue act in Turkey, Nigerian players didn’t just feature this weekend. They defined the storylines.
