Newcastle Targets Geny Catamo for January Move
Newcastle United’s summer business was all about youth and upside. The brief was clear: younger legs, room to grow, long-term value. Now, with the January window creeping into view, the recruitment team is widening the lens – and one name has moved sharply into focus.
Geny Catamo, Sporting CP’s lively winger, has drawn Newcastle’s attention and is being watched closely ahead of the winter market.
A winger on the rise
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have stepped up their scouting of the 25-year-old in recent weeks, joining a growing Premier League queue. Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all checked in on Catamo, while Aston Villa continue to monitor his situation.
Catamo is doing his part to fuel the interest. The Mozambique international has started the season strongly, registering two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers, combined with his age profile and upward curve, tick the sort of boxes Newcastle’s recruitment department has been keen to prioritise.
Newcastle are not arriving late to this story. Bailey reports that several clubs made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have kept a close eye on his progress since. The player’s trajectory is clear. The problem, as so often in these cases, lies with the selling club.
Sporting’s hard line and Sunderland’s failed push
Sporting’s stance has been firm. Sunderland discovered that the hard way.
The Black Cats made Catamo their primary target in the last window but hit a brick wall. Sporting refused to enter negotiations and pointed suitors straight to the release clause: €60 million, roughly £51 million. Pay it in full, or don’t bother.
Sunderland walked away, unwilling to commit that level of fee. Their interest, though, has not disappeared, and now they face a far more congested field. Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa all provide fresh Premier League competition, each weighing up whether Catamo represents value at the price Sporting have set.
Premier League pull vs €60m reality
One factor could tilt the balance towards England. Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and is attracted by the chance to test himself in England. That openness gives Newcastle and the rest of the pack a crucial starting point: the player wants the stage they can offer.
But desire alone does not move a release clause.
So far, there is no indication that Newcastle have submitted an offer or even opened formal talks with Sporting. The situation, for now, remains in the scouting and assessment phase. The key question hangs over Lisbon: will Sporting soften their €60 million stance once January arrives, or will they again demand the full figure up front?
If Sporting hold the line, any move for Catamo becomes a major financial call rather than a clever, opportunistic piece of business. If they blink, the race changes overnight.
Newcastle’s recruitment team are already running the numbers and weighing the risk. Is a 25-year-old winger with a bright start to the season and genuine Premier League ambition worth a fee in the region of £51 million? Or does that kind of outlay push them to look elsewhere when the window opens and the real decisions begin?
