Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Denies Assault Allegation in Court
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, the former Premier League winger now with MK Dons, has appeared in court to deny an allegation that he assaulted his wife during an incident at the couple’s home in Staffordshire.
The 34-year-old, who once lit up the top flight with Cardiff City and previously played for Wolves, is accused of attacking his wife, Saira, at their luxury property in Shenstone in June.
He was arrested after police were called to the address and later charged with assault by beating.
Court appearance on crutches
Mendez-Laing appeared at Cannock magistrates’ court on Friday, arriving on crutches. Inside the courtroom, the Birmingham-born forward spoke only to confirm his name, age and address before entering a not guilty plea to a single count of assault by beating.
The court heard that Saira, the mother of his child, was allegedly struck repeatedly over the head and suffered an injury to her arm during the incident. The confrontation is said to have started after what was described as a “disagreement about a phone.”
Mendez-Laing denies any physical attack.
It is understood that the Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge last month.
Trial set for January
District Judge Joseph O’Connor granted the player conditional bail and listed the case for trial in January next year, when the detailed evidence will be tested in court.
The case comes barely a year after Mendez-Laing and Saira were married. Their wedding in June last year was marked publicly by MK Dons, who shared a photograph of the couple on the club’s official social media channels along with a congratulatory message.
Club and country
While rebuilding his club career in League One with MK Dons, currently 19th in the table, Mendez-Laing has also stepped onto the international stage. Eligible through his mother and maternal grandmother, he represents Guatemala at senior level.
His highest domestic profile came with Cardiff City, where he made 20 Premier League appearances in the 2019/20 season, scoring four goals before leaving the club in September 2020.
MK Dons have declined to comment on the case, stressing they will not discuss an ongoing legal matter.
