Nathan Collins Injury Puts Ireland's Nations League Start in Jeopardy

Republic of Ireland captain Nathan Collins faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the Nations League after suffering a calf injury with Brentford.

The centre-back limped out of Brentford's 1-1 draw with Sunderland in the Premier League last weekend, and the damage is serious enough to rule him out until after the upcoming international window.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews drew a firm line under any hope of a quick return when he addressed the injury in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Bees’ clash with Bournemouth.

"No, he won't be involved this side of the international break. Unfortunately, he's picked up a calf injury," Andrews said, confirming a spell on the sidelines for the defender, who has 40 international caps.

The setback clearly did not come out of nowhere. Collins had tried to grit his teeth and carry on.

"He probably felt it a little bit earlier in the game and tried to play through it, naturally, like he would, given the type of character he is and being one of our leaders and our captains.

"So, no, unfortunately he won't be involved."

For Heimir Hallgrimsson and Ireland, the timing is brutal. Collins is not just a starter; he is the defensive reference point and the armband wearer for a side about to walk into a demanding Nations League schedule.

Ireland open their Group B3 campaign away to Kosovo on Thursday, 24 September, before hosting Israel three days later. Two games in four days, both carrying weight, and now potentially without their captain.

Hallgrimsson must decide quickly who shoulders that responsibility when the group stage kicks off in Pristina.
