Mikel Arteta Extends Contract with Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has committed his future to Arsenal, agreeing an improved new contract with the Premier League champions that will keep him at the club deep into his second decade in north London.

The Spaniard’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of this season, and negotiations have been running for months as Arsenal moved to lock down the architect of their resurgence. An agreement was described as “close” earlier in the month. Now it is done.

Exact terms remain under wraps, but the new contract is understood to take Arteta through at least his 10th year at the club, a remarkable tenure in modern elite management after his appointment in December 2019. Arsenal have not only backed his vision on the pitch; they have backed it heavily on the balance sheet as well.

Arteta’s salary will jump sharply from his current £10m per year, with a significant uplift and the continuation of performance-related bonuses worth up to an additional £5m. It is the financial language of a club convinced it has the right man in place and determined to keep him there.

The manager himself has never sounded like a man looking elsewhere. Asked about his contract situation last week, he was unequivocal: “They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”

For Arsenal, who have built a title-winning side around Arteta’s demanding, detailed approach, this is more than a routine renewal. It is a statement that the project is not nearing its peak, but entering a new phase — with the same driving force still at the helm.
