Manchester City 4–2 Liverpool: Hemp's Heroics in WSL Thriller
Manchester City clung to their unbeaten start with white knuckles and real nerve, edging a breathless 4–2 win over Gareth Taylor’s Liverpool in a wild night at the Joie Stadium.
It was frantic. It was flawed. It was impossible to take your eyes off.
Hemp strikes first, Liverpool bite back
City needed only 13 minutes to bare their teeth. Carlotta Wamser, on her home debut, stepped in from the right and slid a perfectly weighted pass into space. Lauren Hemp did the rest. One touch to steady, one swing of that left foot, and the winger drilled past former teammate Khiara Keating to give the hosts an early lead.
Control? It didn’t last.
Six minutes later, a loose moment at the back undid City’s bright start. A defensive error opened the door and Alice Bergström walked straight through it, punishing the hosts with a sharp finish that pulled Liverpool level and silenced the early celebrations.
City wobbled. Liverpool sensed something more.
Nine minutes on, the visitors turned the game on its head. Vivien Endemann found herself in the sort of close-range position that keeps goalkeepers awake at night. Ayaka Yamashita couldn’t keep out her effort and, suddenly, Liverpool led. From 1–0 down to 2–1 up in a blur. The Joie Stadium felt the mood swing.
Shaw pounces as chaos reigns
City needed a lifeline and got one courtesy of an old friend in the opposite goal.
Hemp again drove at the Liverpool defence and let fly. Her shot took a deflection and Keating, usually so assured, spilled it under pressure. Bunny Shaw, alive to every rebound, reacted first and tapped in from close range. A poacher’s goal, but a vital one, dragging City back to 2–2 and restoring some sense of order to a chaotic first half.
The break arrived like a pause button. Both sides regrouped. The second half, by contrast, simmered rather than boiled. Chances came and went, but the early frenzy gave way to something cagier, more cautious. One mistake, one moment, was always going to decide it.
Late drama, late breaks, City survive
The pressure finally told in the 90th minute, and it came from an unlikely source.
Grace Clinton swung in a cross from the left, aiming for Shaw. The striker couldn’t quite connect, but the ball kept travelling and panic flickered across the Liverpool back line. Captain Grace Fisk, stretching to deal with the danger, only succeeded in diverting the ball past Keating and into her own net. City, almost out of time, were suddenly back in front.
Liverpool pushed up in desperation. That was all Hemp needed.
Deep into added time, the winger picked up the ball beyond halfway and just ran. Space in front of her, Keating backpedalling, tired legs chasing shadows. Hemp drove into the box and, with the composure of a player who had already shaped the night, fired past the goalkeeper again to seal it at 4–2.
From the first goal to the last, this was Hemp’s stage. For City, it was another three points. For the rest of the WSL, it was another reminder: even on a chaotic night, this side finds a way to win.
