Lucas Bergvall Signs New Tottenham Deal After U-Turn

Three months ago, Lucas Bergvall looked done with Tottenham. Now he has tied his future to the club he wanted to leave.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder has signed a new contract at Spurs, a sharp twist in a story that had seemed destined to end with a summer exit after Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival and a spell on the fringes.

Back in the summer, Bergvall told the club he wanted out. His minutes had dried up following De Zerbi’s late-season appointment, and frustration grew as Spurs lurched through a chaotic run-in that ended with them narrowly avoiding relegation. Interest gathered quickly. Nottingham Forest tested Tottenham’s resolve with a £38m bid, which Spurs rejected. Aston Villa and Chelsea circled as well, sensing an opportunity.

The move never came. The mood has.

So far this season, Bergvall has played just 45 minutes of Premier League football, yet the tone around his future has shifted from uncertainty to commitment.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” he said after signing. The words carry a very different weight given where he stood only weeks ago.

His focus now is personal growth and end product. “I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

De Zerbi’s role in this turnaround is impossible to ignore. In July, the Italian described Bergvall as “a top, top, top player” but refused to beg him to stay, making it clear he would not “convince anyone to stay” against their wishes. He also held his hands up, admitting he had made mistakes in how he handled the youngster during last season’s turbulent finish.

That honesty appears to have reset the relationship. Now, with Bergvall committed, De Zerbi has doubled down on his belief in the midfielder’s ceiling.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential,” the Spurs head coach said.

Tottenham have kept a player they once expected to lose. The question now is whether Bergvall’s renewed faith is matched with the one thing he wanted most in the first place: a real run in this team.
