Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract at Tottenham Hotspur

Lucas Bergvall has slammed the door on weeks of doubt, signing a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur and handing Roberto De Zerbi a significant victory in his rebuilding project.

Three months ago, this looked unlikely. The Swedish international had told the club he wanted out after a bruising end to last season, when his minutes dried up and frustration grew. Big clubs circled, Tottenham hesitated, and it felt like one of their brightest young midfielders was slipping away.

Now he is staying – and fully on board.

“I think we're building something great here. It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall told the club’s official channels, sounding far removed from the player who had pushed for a move. “I'm always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.”

The shift in mood has not come without a fight. Nottingham Forest tested Spurs’ resolve in the summer with a £38m bid that was flatly rejected by the hierarchy. Aston Villa and Chelsea watched closely, sensing an opportunity if the stand-off continued. Instead, Tottenham dug in, De Zerbi held his line, and the 20-year-old has now committed again.

Next Steps

For Bergvall, the next step is simple: justify the faith.

He has played just 45 Premier League minutes this season and knows that has to change. “Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can,” he said. “I'm getting better every day in training and I'm looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

Those words land differently given the context. De Zerbi spent the summer laying down hard truths, publicly insisting he would not keep any player against their will and privately demanding full commitment from a squad that only narrowly avoided relegation last season. Bergvall, one of the symbols of Tottenham’s future, found himself right in the middle of that tension.

Turning that situation around to secure his signature again is a major win for the club. Despite his age, Bergvall has already made 80 appearances for Spurs in all competitions and collected 14 caps for Sweden, his rise punctuated by a standout World Cup campaign in the summer. This is not a prospect being protected; this is a senior player in a young body.

The relationship with De Zerbi has clearly been repaired. The end of last season was chaotic, pressure everywhere as Spurs clung to their top-flight status. The Italian later admitted he made mistakes in how he handled the midfielder during that spell. Now, after the renewal, he has gone out of his way to underline just how central Bergvall is to his vision.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas' desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi said. “Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. He also understands that development is a process and he has shown a fantastic attitude towards working on the areas of his game where he can become even better. I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

The words are generous, but the recent reality has been harsher.

Bergvall started the 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening Premier League weekend, then the 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic. His campaign, though, turned on a single mistake. A first-half error against Brentford gifted Vitaly Janelt a goal, and De Zerbi hauled him off at the break. Since then, he has watched from the bench in league games against Newcastle and Forest, unused and waiting.

That is the tightrope he now walks at Tottenham: trusted enough to be tied down long term, challenged enough to know nothing will be given.

Rapid Journey

Bergvall’s journey to this point has been rapid. He arrived in North London from Djurgarden in the summer of 2024, earned a contract extension by April 2025 that ran to 2031, and now, with this latest agreement, has doubled down on the idea that his prime years should belong to Spurs.

The contract is signed. The uncertainty is over. The real question now is whether Lucas Bergvall can turn renewed faith into the kind of influence that defines De Zerbi’s Tottenham.
