Lazio Considers Icardi as Gattuso Favors Mobility
Lazio’s transfer window has officially closed, but the market hasn’t. Not for free agents, and not for a club that still has room to manoeuvre.
With Diogo Leite already through the door on a free, the Biancocelesti still have two vacant spots on their official Serie A squad list after leaving out Patric and Luca Pellegrini. That flexibility has opened the door to some big names – and an equally big internal debate.
Lotito tempted by Icardi opportunity
Mauro Icardi is the headline option. Unattached after his departure from Galatasaray, the former Inter captain sits on the shelf, a proven Serie A goalscorer waiting for the right call.
According to Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, president Claudio Lotito is fascinated by the possibility. From a boardroom perspective, it makes sense: no transfer fee, instant visibility, a striker whose numbers in Italy still command respect.
For a club that has often had to work the margins of the market, the idea of picking up Icardi for nothing is the sort of temptation that lingers.
On the touchline, though, the view is different.
Gattuso cool on Icardi as he backs Pinamonti
Gennaro Gattuso has made his demands clear since the summer: he wants a mobile No. 9, a centre-forward who presses, runs the channels, and stretches defences. That request led to the late arrival of Andrea Pinamonti, brought in specifically to fit that profile.
Gattuso, by contrast, does not see Icardi as a priority. The Argentine’s penalty-box instincts are unquestioned, but his game revolves around movement in tight spaces rather than relentless work across the front line. For a coach trying to build a system based on intensity and collective effort, that matters.
The focus now is on getting Pinamonti fully match-fit and integrated, not on reshaping the attack for a big-name finisher who doesn’t quite match the blueprint. For the moment, Icardi is an option on paper rather than a target on the training pitch.
Bissouma emerges as midfield insurance
While the Icardi question hangs in the air, another name has entered the frame: Yves Bissouma.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton midfielder is being evaluated as a way to reinforce a department hit by recent injuries. His profile is different to Icardi’s in every sense – less glamour, more graft. Power in the duels, legs in transition, depth in an area where Gattuso can’t afford to be short over a long season.
It is the kind of move that fits a quiet, corrective phase of squad building rather than a headline-grabbing coup.
Time on Lazio’s side
Crucially, Lazio are under no obligation to rush. Those two open squad slots give them room to breathe, to watch the team evolve over the coming weeks and decide whether a finisher like Icardi or a midfield enforcer like Bissouma is truly necessary.
Lotito sees opportunity. Gattuso sees balance and structure. Somewhere between the president’s ambition and the coach’s plan, Lazio will decide whether this free-agent window becomes a turning point – or just a footnote in their season.
