Kylian Mbappé Condemns Viral Meme for Historical Insensitivity
Kylian Mbappé has drawn a clear line between banter and blindness to history.
The Real Madrid and France forward has condemned a viral AI-generated meme that pastes his face onto the body of a dictator, calling it evidence of “a lack of political and human awareness”.
The image has circulated widely on social media, often shared by fans who see it as a tongue-in-cheek way of illustrating how Mbappé dominates matches or exerts influence at club level. He recognises that side of it – up to a point.
“There's a funny side to it because you can sense that, for some people, it's good natured,” he told France Football. The joke, though, stops being a joke when it drifts into historical amnesia.
“Then there's a side that's a bit less funny, because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history,” he said. “Being compared to people who murder others, or who have made millions upon millions of people miserable... I don't think I've done that in my life.”
That contrast sits at the heart of his frustration: the modern meme culture that treats everything as content, and the weight of the past that refuses to be turned into a punchline.
“On one hand, I know it's done lightheartedly and doesn't go that far,” Mbappé continued, “but it sometimes reveals a lack of political and human awareness among people.”
The France captain also addressed the “Mobut” nickname thrown his way by international team-mate Ousmane Dembélé during the 2026 World Cup, a reference drawn from Mobutu Sese Seko, the long-time dictator of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Here, Mbappé showed a different level of tolerance.
“Ousmane, that's a different thing. He took that from social media. He's just having a laugh,” he said.
The distinction is telling. Mbappé can live with dressing-room teasing. What he is pushing back against is a wider culture that casually blurs the line between sporting dominance and the legacy of men who ruled through fear.
