John Mousinho's Fury Over Cardiff City Incident
John Mousinho did not bother hiding his anger.
The Portsmouth head coach says he was “absolutely furious” at the position he was placed in after speaking publicly about an incident involving Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and a supporter during Pompey’s win over the Bluebirds on Saturday.
Late in the second half, with Portsmouth closing out the game, Bielik went to the stands to retrieve the ball. What followed was a physical confrontation with a fan, an ugly flashpoint that cut across the rhythm of the match and immediately drew the attention of players, officials and police.
Hampshire Police later confirmed they had opened an investigation into an incident “in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault”.
In the immediate aftermath, Mousinho apologised to Cardiff’s players and condemned the behaviour of the supporters involved. At that stage, he had not seen the incident clearly himself, relying instead on what he had been told in the heat of the moment.
By Wednesday, ahead of Portsmouth’s fixture against Charlton, the tone had shifted. This time, Mousinho had watched the footage.
“I've now seen the footage and my comments post-match were entirely based off what I was told,” he told BBC Radio Solent during his pre-match media duties.
He explained that from his technical area he had no clear view when the confrontation broke out. The picture he painted was of a manager reacting in good faith to information passed down to him on the touchline.
“When the altercation kicked off I couldn't see it from where I was myself, the referee then spoke to us and his words at the time were very clear that he had seen the incident in its entirety.
“He said that as Krystian went over to get the ball, the fan slapped him, and a second fan threw a ball at Perry Ng's head.”
Those words framed Mousinho’s initial response. The video has since given him a different perspective, and with a police investigation under way, every detail now carries weight.
For Portsmouth, the focus moves back to the pitch against Charlton. For Bielik, the teenager involved and the authorities, the repercussions of those few chaotic seconds are only just beginning.
