Jack Payne: A Settled Force at Colchester United

Jack Payne has been a lot of things in his career – tidy playmaker, set-piece specialist, dependable pro. What he has rarely been is settled.

At Colchester United, that finally looks different.

The 31-year-old is poised to make his 100th appearance for the U’s this weekend, a milestone he has never previously reached at any club. For a player who has lived the nomadic life of the lower-league technician, that number means more than most.

“It’s the first time I’ve actually played 100 games for one club,” he said. “It shouldn’t have taken this long, but I’m really glad to reach the 100 mark.”

You can see why Colchester have held on to him. Since arriving in Essex in 2024, Payne has quietly become the heartbeat of the side. He dragged them through a fraught 2024-25 campaign, winning the club’s player of the season award as they clung on to their Football League status, and earned a place in the EFL League Two Team of the Year for his efforts.

Across his 99 games so far, he has produced 22 goals and 18 assists – numbers that underline why his name rarely disappears from opposition analysis meetings.

A rare sense of home

Payne’s CV reads like a tour of English football’s middle tiers: Southend United, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Swindon Town, Charlton Athletic. Loan spells at Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers, Bradford City and MK Dons. A career of packed bags and new postcodes.

“I’ve moved more often than I would have liked over the years for various different reasons,” he admitted. “I’ve felt settled here and hopefully I can be here for many more seasons.

“The supporters have taken really well to me, and the club really suits me.”

This is his third season at Colchester. Only once before has he stayed that long anywhere. For a player who has often been the short-term solution, the feeling of being part of something longer-term is clearly cherished.

“I really enjoy myself here, and I want to make that many more,” he said of his 100-game landmark. The message is clear: this is not a man eyeing the exit.

Interest rebuffed, commitment underlined

That loyalty has been tested. Manager Danny Cowley revealed to BBC Essex that Colchester turned down bids for Payne in the summer window, a reminder that his influence has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.

Payne appreciated the compliment, but never saw it as a fork in the road.

“It’s nice to hear and I’m obviously doing something right if people from elsewhere are looking to pay money for you,” he said. “I’d lie if I said it wasn’t flattering to hear about that, but that was never going to happen.

“I was always going to be here past the window, and hopefully past a few more windows.”

For a club still rebuilding and trying to escape the gravitational pull of the relegation battle, that kind of clarity from a key player matters. Colchester have been in enough scrapes in recent seasons; losing their creative hub was not a risk they were willing to take.

Waiting for the spark

This season has started in a quieter key for Payne. He set up Colchester’s first league goal of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Accrington, but has not added to his tally of goals or assists in the five matches since.

He is not losing sleep over it.

“I never worry about those things as I know as long as I’m available and I’m playing goals and assists will come,” he said. “It’s just about making sure I’m available, making sure my performances are good and I feel good in myself.”

The numbers will likely correct themselves. Payne has built a career on end product, on clever passes between the lines and calm finishes arriving late in the box. A short dry spell does not rewrite that story.

What matters more, to him and to Colchester, is that he is on the pitch, fit and influential, driving a team that only just escaped the trapdoor towards something more ambitious.

For once, Jack Payne is not wondering where he’ll be next year. The question now is how far he can take Colchester United from the place he finally calls home.
