Ian Wright ‘Gutted’ as Arsenal Lose Morgan Rogers to Chelsea

Ian Wright did not bother dressing it up. For him, Arsenal’s summer business carried one glaring failure – and it now wears blue.

The former Gunners striker admitted he was “gutted” that Arsenal allowed Morgan Rogers to slip through their fingers and join Chelsea in a £117m deal, after spending much of the window seemingly in pole position for the winger.

Arsenal had gone into the summer with a clear brief: add another high-end attacking threat after wrapping up an early move for Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. The recruitment team scanned the very top shelf. Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez all sat high on their list as Mikel Arteta searched for a left-sided difference-maker to complete his front line.

They did not come away empty-handed. Bruno Guimaraes arrived to bolster midfield, Ezri Konsa to strengthen the back line, and there is depth and quality across the squad. But in Wright’s eyes, the one profile Arteta craved never walked through the door.

Wright's Thoughts

Speaking on The Overlap, Wright cut straight to the point.

“It’s not a disastrous window,” he said. “But if I’m Mikel, I wouldn’t be happy with how this window has gone simply because we’ve gone another window where we have not got that forward.

“Mikel has talked about getting players to take us to that level, he did it again after Paris, where we didn’t have that player to break them. That is the player Mikel wanted. They chased Vini until the end of the earth and left Morgan Rogers dangling.”

The pressure finally told – just not in Arsenal’s favour. Chelsea stepped in, sensed hesitation and paid the money. A nine-figure fee, £117m, took Rogers to Stamford Bridge while Arsenal, who had led the race for weeks, watched a key target cross the London divide.

For a club gearing up for another title push, Wright believes that decision could leave a mark.

“You say we have got those types of players but that is what Mikel wanted. It is a position where we need that player,” he continued. “Of course Saka is back, Odegaard is back, Havertz is back and playing together, but he wanted that difference-maker.

“He [Rogers] is the one we were linked with ages ago and he would have loved to have come, I can feel it.”

The frustration, in Wright’s mind, lies not only in the outcome but in the message it sends. Arsenal’s prolonged pursuit of Vinicius Junior, he suggested, may have complicated their standing with Rogers.

“There’s something that’s happened with Arsenal with the way they were going for Vini,” Wright said. “If you’re a player and you see a team going for him, you think, ‘I thought they were interested in me?’ It is the player the manager wanted. Chelsea thought, well if you’re not going to pay it, we’ll pay it. I’m gutted, I would have loved him to come.”

All of this now feeds straight into the narrative of the weekend. Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge next, facing a Chelsea side suddenly being talked about as serious title contenders – with Rogers now part of their armoury.

So Arsenal arrive in west London still searching for that elusive left-sided game-changer, while Chelsea field the one Wright believes Arteta truly wanted. The question now is simple: will that missed signing shape the title race, or will Arsenal prove they can live without the player who got away?
