FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle in 3-0 Victory

FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team into sixth place and deepened the gloom around a Zwolle side still reeling from that 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord.

Any hope of a measured response from the visitors vanished almost as soon as the game settled. Groningen pressed high, moved the ball with purpose and made it clear who would dictate the evening. Zwolle, nervy and cautious, spent the opening phase trying not to concede again after last week, rather than trying to impose themselves.

The pressure told after 20 minutes.

Marco Rente stepped in with authority and slid a clever ball into the channel for Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder showed real calm, lifting his head instead of snatching at goal, and rolled a perfectly weighted cut-back into the path of Thom van Bergen. One touch, composed finish. 1-0, and fully deserved.

Groningen smelled vulnerability and went after it. Zwolle’s passing out from the back never looked secure, and when Ryan Thomas coughed up possession in a dangerous area, Schreuders punished him without mercy.

He gathered the loose ball outside the box, shifted it onto what is supposed to be his weaker left foot and drove a crisp strike beyond the reach of the keeper. From 2-0 down, Zwolle were staring at another long, unforgiving night.

The Euroborg relaxed. Groningen started to enjoy themselves, zipping passes through midfield, winning duels, keeping Zwolle penned in. Lukkien’s side did not need to force the issue; the control was there, the tempo theirs to set.

Only after the interval did PEC Zwolle show a hint of life.

A low cross from the left finally found a blue shirt in the area, Gabriël Reiziger stretching to make contact. For a split second, it looked like the moment that might drag the visitors back into the contest, but the touch lacked precision and the ball drifted just wide of the far post. Groningen had been warned, but not wounded.

They tightened up again, dropped the risk level a notch and went back to managing the game. Zwolle huffed, tried to push their full-backs on, but Groningen kept them at arm’s length, snapping into challenges and breaking up what little rhythm the away side tried to build.

Then came the goal that killed any remaining doubt.

On 68 minutes, an indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine unfolded to perfection. The lay-off was neat, the angle tight, but Tygo Land did not hesitate. He stepped in and hammered a ferocious strike into the top corner, a finish that turned a training-ground pattern into a highlight-reel moment. 3-0, and the Euroborg roared its approval.

From there, Groningen played with the authority of a side that knew the job was done. The only question left was the margin. Van Bergen almost added another flourish late on when the ball broke kindly to him inside the penalty area. He swung his left foot at it, the chance begging, but this time the contact deserted him and the effort skewed away.

No matter. The damage had long been done.

Groningen walked off the pitch looking up the table, their confidence swelling after a commanding home performance. Zwolle trudged away again with more questions than answers, stuck in 16th and still searching for a way to stop their season from sliding into real trouble.
