FC Cincinnati Signs Tyrell Malacia on Free Transfer
FC Cincinnati have moved decisively in the market, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer in a deal that underlines the club’s growing ambition.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international arrives in MLS after his contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of last season, ending a stop-start, injury-disrupted spell in England. He has signed with Cincinnati through next June, with an option that could keep him at the club for the 2027-28 season.
Malacia joined United from Feyenoord in 2022, billed then as an aggressive, modern full-back ready to push for a starting role at one of Europe’s giants. He made 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, but persistent fitness issues repeatedly stalled his momentum and limited his impact in the Premier League.
Cincinnati believe the reset suits both sides.
"We are excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience," said general manager Chris Albright. "He's played at the highest levels of the game and understands the demands of competing in those environments.
"His quality on the ball, defensive instincts, and team-first mentality is a welcome addition to the group and we're happy to have him in Cincinnati."
For a club intent on turning regular-season promise into trophies, this is the type of signing that changes the feel of a dressing room. Malacia brings Champions League exposure, Eredivisie pedigree, and the sharp edge that comes from battling for minutes at Manchester United.
Now he swaps Old Trafford for MLS, and a new question hangs over the move: can a defender forged in Europe’s pressure cooker become one of the league’s standard-setters on the left flank?
