Edson Álvarez Denies Kidnapping Allegations Linked to His Name
Edson Álvarez has forcefully rejected allegations linking him to an alleged kidnapping case in Mexico, insisting his name is being dragged into a story that has “nothing to do” with him.
The West Ham and Mexico captain issued a sharply worded statement on his social media accounts after Mexican film producer Juan José López Ordoñez claimed he had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Mexico City in 2024 by relatives of Álvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla.
López Ordoñez told Mexican outlet TV Notas that he was commissioned to produce a documentary on Álvarez’s life and was owed £150,000 for the project. He alleges Álvarez was not one of his captors, but claims the midfielder knew about the plot.
Álvarez has hit back, denying any knowledge or involvement and signalling he is prepared to take the matter to court.
“I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” he wrote, stressing that his image is being used as leverage in a story built for headlines.
He accused sections of the media of chasing clicks rather than facts, saying his name had been repeatedly used “to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me”.
Álvarez said he had initially chosen to stay silent, but that the latest claims crossed a line: “Until now, I had chosen not to respond. However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line.”
He added that some outlets were prioritising “sensationalism” over “accuracy and truth”, and underlined that his focus would remain on his family and his career while he considers legal action.
On the Pitch
On the pitch, Álvarez has become a central figure for club and country since his Mexico debut in 2017 and subsequent rise to the captaincy. He joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has already made 74 appearances for the Hammers, though he has featured just once this season, in the Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth.
Now his next battle may be fought not in midfield, but in the legal arena, as he looks to defend his reputation as fiercely as he usually protects his back line.
