David McDermott: Remembering the Walsall and York City Winger

Tributes have poured in following the death of former Walsall, York City and Kidderminster Harriers winger David McDermott at the age of 38.

A product of Walsall’s youth system, McDermott wrote his name into Saddlers history in 2004 when he became the club’s youngest ever debutant, stepping onto the pitch as a 16-year-old. For a fanbase that prides itself on homegrown talent, that moment felt like the start of something special.

He left Walsall in 2008 and threw himself into life at Kidderminster Harriers, where he became a regular over the next two seasons. McDermott pulled on the shirt 54 times for the Reds and scored twice, his work-rate and willingness to run the hard yards making him a trusted figure in the squad.

York City came next. With the Minstermen, he added another 21 appearances to a career built across the lower leagues, the kind of honest, grafting winger every manager at that level leans on across a long, unforgiving campaign.

Spells with AFC Telford United, Stourbridge, Rushall Olympic and Worcester City followed, as McDermott continued to carve out a career in the English game away from the spotlight but never away from the noise of the terraces or the respect of team-mates.

He leaves behind the legacy of a player who broke through early, fought for every appearance and stayed loyal to the clubs who backed him.
