Calleigh Hedley: Balancing Football and Motherhood with Guernsey FC
Calleigh Hedley stands on the brink of a new season with Guernsey FC, but her toughest opponent no longer wears a different shirt. He sleeps in a cot and answers to the name Luca.
"I'm not looking forward to spending whole days away from him," she admits. The club’s prolific forward is speaking as both a striker and a new mother, trying to knit together two demanding lives that rarely pause for breath.
Goals, nappies and a comeback
Hedley missed half of last season after becoming pregnant, stepping away from the pitch at the height of her form. When she did play, she was ruthless: 16 goals in just eight appearances, enough to finish as the sixth-highest scorer in the Southern Region Women's Football League Division One South.
Those numbers underline her importance. Guernsey FC, still only in their second season in the English league pyramid, know that when Hedley plays, the net usually ripples.
Now, after giving birth to Luca, she has returned to action and is fighting to regain full fitness. The training sessions, the gym work, the early alarms – they all come with a new layer of planning.
"My family are amazing, they're always helping me with Luca," she told BBC Radio Guernsey. If she needs to get to the gym, someone steps in. If she needs to train, another pair of hands appears. “They're always offering 'we'll have him for a bit so you can go do what you need to do'.”
For a player who once only had to worry about defenders and deadlines, that support has become her new foundation. “For the away games, for the home games, they say 'we'll have him, don't worry', so it's been a massive help."
A blistering reminder
Any doubts about whether she could still deliver were answered in two minutes.
In Guernsey’s first-ever Women's FA Cup tie last month, at home to Chessington & Hook United, Hedley announced her return in the most direct way possible. Barely after kick-off, the ball was in the net and her name was back on the scoresheet. She added a second later in the game, though Guernsey slipped to a 3-2 defeat.
"I was shocked," she said. "I wasn't sure I was even going to get a goal, let alone score in two minutes."
The goals meant more than a line in a match report. They were proof – to herself as much as anyone – that the instincts remain sharp, the finish still clinical. “It definitely helped me feel a bit better coming back into it, and I obviously had my family there watching and Luca was there, so it was really nice."
For the club, it was another glimpse of what she can offer in front of goal. For Hedley, it was confirmation that she can still be the same threat, even as everything around her has changed.
Early flights, long days, hard choices
The Green Lionesses open their league campaign on Sunday at home to Bognor Regis Town, before facing three consecutive away fixtures. For most squads, that means a tough run of travel and recovery. For Hedley, it means something else: 4am alarms, airport queues, and a full day away from her son.
Those trips demand early flights to England and late returns to Guernsey the same evening. The schedule is brutal enough for any amateur footballer balancing work and life. Add a baby into the mix and the calculation shifts.
"I don't know if I'll be able to commit to every single away game," she said. The honesty is striking. There is no easy answer here, no simple promise to be everywhere, every week. "But I will definitely be trying to do some, but it'll be difficult having a day away from him."
Guernsey will hope she can be on the plane as often as possible. A fit, firing Hedley gives them a cutting edge few sides at this level can match. Yet every appearance now carries a cost measured not just in miles, but in hours away from Luca.
The new season starts on Sunday. For Guernsey FC, it is another step in their journey through the English pyramid. For their leading scorer, it is something more complicated: a year where every goal will be weighed against the pull of home, and every early flight will ask the same question – how much is she willing to give to keep both dreams alive?
