Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women's Team for World Cup Play-Offs

Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off push later this year.

The Dane is expected to step in as assistant coach, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley as part of a bolstered backroom team. His appointment comes at a critical moment, with Ireland facing a two-legged tie against Kazakhstan in the first round of Women’s World Cup play-off qualifying on 9 and 13 October.

Sorensen will combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa women, a dual responsibility that underlines his growing influence within the women’s game. He will link up with the Ireland squad during international breaks, adding an extra layer of tactical detail and top-flight experience to the camp.

There is a familiar face waiting for him in the technical area. Sorensen will work under manager Carla Ward, who previously went head-to-head with his Everton side in the Women’s Super League while in charge of Villa. Now, instead of plotting against each other, the pair will be tasked with stitching together a game plan to carry Ireland through a high-pressure play-off window.

Play-off Path

Ireland’s route is clear. Kazakhstan first, over two legs. Win that, and the World Cup dream stays alive. The staff reshuffle suggests they intend to attack that challenge with every resource they can find.
