Bradley Barcola: Liverpool's New Signing Ready to Shine
Bradley Barcola has barely had time to unpack, but Liverpool already look ready to lean on him.
The French winger, a two-time Champions League winner, wrapped up his move from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday and was straight into training with his new teammates. Now, just four days later, he is in line to be involved when Liverpool open their Premier League campaign at Portman Road on Friday night.
A priority signing with a winner’s pedigree
Andoni Iraola did not bother hiding how much he wanted this deal.
"We are very happy with Bradley. It was our priority, let's say, to sign a very, very good player in that position," the Liverpool head coach told reporters on Thursday morning.
This is not a speculative signing. Barcola arrives with serious pedigree and recent medals to prove it. That matters in a dressing room trying to push Liverpool back towards the very top of English football.
What seems to have impressed Iraola most, though, is not the honours list, but the attitude behind it.
"I think he has come also with the right mentality. I've liked from him that he wanted Liverpool a lot. He just wanted to come here and I think that's a good first sign," Iraola said.
A player who has tasted the sharp end of the Champions League choosing this project, this moment, this club. For a manager, that is fuel.
Ready to help – but how quickly?
Barcola has already taken part in three sessions with his new side and, by all accounts, has slipped into the group without fuss.
"He trained well with us," Iraola confirmed. "If everything goes well [in] today's training also, he will definitely be available for tomorrow, yes."
Available is one thing. Starting is another.
Asked directly whether Barcola is ready to go straight into the XI, Iraola allowed himself a smile.
"It's a good question, it's a good question," he replied. "I see him in a good place. He has trained with us in three trainings. It's true that he hasn't had minutes in pre-season but he has been training normal with the group. Then it's a decision we have to make."
That is the balance Liverpool must strike. Barcola is fit, sharp in training and clearly eager. But he has not played a single minute of pre-season football. Match rhythm, especially in the Premier League’s opening week, is not something a coach can simply assume.
"I think he's in a good place but we also have to consider that he hasn't had the minutes in the pre-season games," Iraola added.
So the dilemma is set. Throw the new signing straight into the intensity of Portman Road under the Friday night lights, or ease him in from the bench and let his first real impact come against tired legs?
Barcola will travel. He will be in the squad. And with his reputation, his hunger, and his manager’s clear faith, it feels like only a matter of time before he leaves a mark in red. The only real suspense now is whether that moment comes from the first whistle on Friday, or in the kind of late cameo that changes a game – and perhaps the tone of Liverpool’s season.
