Borussia Dortmund's Champions League Home Opener Record
Signal Iduna Park has seen enough Champions League nights to know the script. The anthem swells, the yellow wall rises, and Borussia Dortmund usually start Europe with a statement.
History backs that feeling. Across their seven previous group openers in the competition, BVB have taken four wins and two draws, slipping up only once. That lone defeat came a lifetime ago in football terms: 13 September 1995, their very first Champions League outing, when Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side fell 3-1 at home to eventual winners Juventus. A harsh introduction, but also the last time Dortmund lost a home opener in this competition.
Since then, the numbers tell a story of control and growing authority. Their last four opening fixtures at home read like a checklist of European scalps and clean sheets: 1-0 against Ajax in 2012, 2-0 against Arsenal in 2014, a tight 0-0 with Barcelona in 2019, and a commanding 3-0 over Copenhagen in 2022. Not a single goal conceded in that run. When the group stage begins in Dortmund, visiting forwards usually leave frustrated.
The contrast with Villarreal CF could hardly be sharper. The Spanish club, so often awkward opponents in knockout football, have never managed to win on matchday one of the UEFA Champions League. Their record on opening night stands at three draws and two defeats, a pattern that keeps dragging them into early trouble in the group.
Last season underlined that theme. Villarreal started with a narrow 1-0 loss away to Tottenham Hotspur, another reminder that they tend to grow into a campaign rather than explode out of the blocks.
So as another Champions League season looms, one question hangs in the air: does Dortmund’s fortress-like first step hold firm, or is Villarreal finally ready to tear up its own script?
