Barcelona's Plans for Messi Tribute Remain Unclear
Barcelona have no active plans to stage a tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the greatest player in the club’s history approaching the twilight of his career.
Information relayed to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez indicates that the board is not currently working on any official homage to the Argentine. No testimonial, no farewell night pencilled in, no concrete project on the table.
For a club that built its modern identity around Messi, the silence is deafening.
A legend, a rupture, and a scar that never closed
Messi’s place in Barcelona’s story is untouchable. His numbers, his trophies, his nights at Camp Nou – they define an era. Yet the way it ended in 2021 left a scar that still shapes every conversation about a possible tribute.
The split was not driven by football. Barcelona wanted to keep him. Messi wanted to stay. La Liga’s financial regulations and the club’s own salary structure boxed them into a corner they could not escape.
Joan Laporta had campaigned for the presidency on the promise of renewing Messi’s contract. When the moment of truth arrived, Barcelona pulled the offer. The club cited the league’s rules and financial fair play limits. Messi walked out of the stadium in tears and boarded a plane to Paris Saint-Germain.
The damage went beyond a contract. It fractured a relationship.
Laporta has since admitted that his bond with Messi is “not what it used to be”. He has spoken about an awkward encounter at a Ballon d’Or gala, when Messi felt it was better that they did not even greet each other. That kind of distance does not lend itself to a grand farewell at the stadium where he became a legend.
Hopes, hints, and a tribute that keeps drifting away
Earlier this year, whispers grew louder about a possible tribute match. The idea of Messi returning, even just for one night, hung in the air. Laporta did little to kill the dream. He never fully dismissed the notion and even declared that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou”.
The words sounded like the start of a reconciliation. The reality, for now, is different.
According to the latest information, Barcelona are not moving forward with any formal farewell event. No date. No opponent. No project team working behind the scenes. Just a vague sense that something should happen one day.
Laporta continues to call Messi a Barcelona legend and has spoken publicly about his desire to mend the relationship. He has also floated the idea that a proper public tribute might arrive once the Camp Nou renovation is complete, when the club returns to a modernised home worthy of its greatest icon.
But that is a distant horizon, not a plan.
So Messi continues his career far from Barcelona, the clock ticking on his playing days, while the club that shaped him and was shaped by him waits. Not for the right moment on the pitch, but for the right moment off it – and for a relationship to thaw enough to allow the farewell that both sides, and world football, know he deserves.
