Arteta Praises Tremendous Raya as Key Signing for Team

Mikel Arteta has refused to crown David Raya as his best piece of transfer business, but left no doubt about how central the goalkeeper has become to his project.

Facing the media ahead of this weekend’s league fixture, the Spanish coach sidestepped the comparison game, yet spoke with clear conviction about Raya’s impact on the club.

“I don't know – he's been a tremendous signing, there is no question about that,” Arteta said when asked if the goalkeeper ranked as his finest deal. “Whether he is the best or not is just an opinion. It doesn't matter, we are so happy to have him. He has elevated the team to a different level and now we have to maintain that level.”

That last line carried the weight of expectation. Raya has not just slotted in; he has changed the way the side plays. His distribution, his calmness, his presence under pressure – all of it has fed directly into Arteta’s demand for control in high‑stakes moments.

The journey to that point, though, has not been straightforward. Arteta was keen to underline the mental resilience behind the gloves.

“I think it's his mentality,” he said. “David has tremendous quality but he has overcome a lot of difficulties and challenges to reach this point. It wasn't easy at the beginning, he had to dig in and prove himself. Now, he has the right to be one of the best.”

Those words frame Raya not as a sudden success, but as a goalkeeper hardened by setbacks and scrutiny, now trusted to anchor a side with serious ambitions.
