Arsenal's Pursuit of Rio Ngumoha Hits a Dead End
Arsenal’s search for a new left winger looks set to hit another dead end. Rio Ngumoha, the Liverpool teenager who has caught the eye of the Premier League champions, is closing in on a new long-term deal at Anfield.
The 18-year-old has been tracked by Arsenal as they try to reshape their attack for 2027. Failed moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior left them without a direct replacement for Gabriel Martinelli in the summer, and the expectation inside the game has been that they would return to the market in January.
Ngumoha quickly emerged as one of the names at the top of their list. But Liverpool moved first – and hard.
Liverpool close the door
Earlier this month, Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract. Those talks are now being converted into a full, binding deal, and the mood on Merseyside is calm.
Pete O’Rourke has reported that Liverpool do not foresee any major obstacles. The club are determined to keep him, and crucially, the player is said to be happy where he is, with the expectation of regular starts this season forming a key part of the plan laid out to him.
That pathway matters. Liverpool have sold Ngumoha on a future in which he is not just a squad prospect but a central figure, and the youngster appears to have bought into that vision. All signs point in one direction: he stays.
For Arsenal, that is a familiar frustration. Another left-sided option, another door closing.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future”
Fabrizio Romano has echoed the same message. He has detailed how, during the summer, rumours swirled around Bayern Munich and other clubs, but Liverpool’s stance never shifted: Ngumoha was not for sale, not available, not even open to negotiation.
The club see him as one of the best young players in his position anywhere, and they have acted accordingly. No auctions. No flirtation. Just a hard line and a clear internal belief.
Now Arsenal’s name has entered the conversation. The logic is obvious. Martinelli has gone, no like-for-like replacement has arrived, and a club with title ambitions cannot ignore a talent of Ngumoha’s profile. Arsenal are known for scouring the market for opportunities, especially in the younger age bracket where they can build a core for years.
If a door ever opens in 2027, 2028 or beyond, they would be in the queue. So would several clubs from abroad. The interest is not going away.
But interest alone does not move a player.
Arsenal wait, Liverpool act
Right now, Liverpool are the only ones truly at the table. Conversations over the new contract are active. The details still need ironing out – guarantees over game time, financial structure, the usual fine print – yet the direction of travel is clear.
Liverpool trust Rio Ngumoha. They are building around him, not just protecting an asset. Arsenal, by contrast, are left scanning a market that keeps pushing back.
The champions will keep watching, hoping a crack appears in Liverpool’s resolve in the years ahead. For the moment, though, the message is blunt and unchanged: Ngumoha is staying put, and the future on the left at Anfield looks increasingly spoken for.
