Arsenal’s Álvarez Gamble Fails – Gerrard’s Relief

Arsenal pushed their luck with Julián Álvarez right to the edge of the window. They waited, they called, they tried to charm a World Cup winner back to the Premier League. The answer never changed.

Álvarez only had eyes for Barcelona.

All summer, the message from the Argentine’s camp stayed consistent: if he left Atlético Madrid, it would be for the Camp Nou, not the Emirates. Arsenal still chose to linger in the wings, hoping late drama might flip the script in their favour.

It never did.

Barcelona or Nothing – Until Atlético Stepped In

Arsenal’s persistence wasn’t blind. They were encouraged when Atlético made it clear they would not sell Álvarez directly to Barcelona. The Spanish club were unhappy with the Catalans’ approach to the deal and shut the door on a straight move to La Liga rivals.

That stance changed the landscape. If Álvarez wanted out, he would have to take a detour.

Atlético’s position was blunt: stay in Madrid or go to Arsenal. No Barcelona. No workaround.

For Arsenal, that should have been the opening. A clear route to one of the most coveted forwards in Europe. A player with the movement, finishing and intelligence to add a new layer to Mikel Arteta’s attack and nudge an already strong squad closer to the game’s biggest prizes.

Álvarez still said no.

He chose to remain at Atlético, backing continuity and the hope that a future path to Barcelona will eventually open. Arsenal, left waiting at the door, walked away empty-handed.

A Win for Atlético – And a Quiet One for Liverpool

Álvarez’s decision did not just shape Arsenal’s summer. It pleased at least one high-profile figure on Merseyside.

Steven Gerrard, speaking about the saga, made no attempt to hide where his sympathies lay. He backed Atlético’s refusal to strengthen a direct rival at home and in Europe, and he didn’t disguise his satisfaction that Arsenal missed out.

“I understand his point of view, but Atlético Madrid don't want to strengthen a rival and be a feeder club to the teams you can compete domestically with and in the Champions League, so you can understand it from a club point of view as well.

“I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!”

From a Liverpool icon, that last line lands with a certain edge. Gerrard knows exactly how dangerous a fully loaded Arsenal can be in a title race. The idea of them adding a forward of Álvarez’s calibre clearly did not appeal.

What Arsenal Lost

Inside Arsenal, Álvarez was viewed as a potential difference-maker. Not just another forward, but one who could shift the dynamics of their attack – stretch defences, press from the front, and provide the kind of ruthless edge in the final third that often decides tight title races and Champions League ties.

Missing out on him is not just about a failed chase. It is about the type of player they could not quite land: a World Cup winner, still young, already proven at the top level, and hungry for more.

Álvarez remains exactly what he was at the start of the summer – one of the most wanted forwards in world football. Only now, he stays in Madrid, his eyes still fixed on Barcelona, waiting for the day Atlético’s stance softens or circumstances change.

Arsenal move on without him, forced to find that extra gear from within their current squad or from another market opportunity. Álvarez, meanwhile, continues his career at Atlético, holding out for the move he truly wants.

At some point, either Barcelona will find a way, or Arsenal will look back on this summer and wonder how close they really came.
