Aleksandar Pavlovic Rejects Manchester City Move

Aleksandar Pavlovic was the midfielder Manchester City wanted most. He just never wanted them back.

According to Bild, the 22-year-old Bayern Munich talent sat at the top of City’s shortlist from March, identified early as the ideal long-term solution in the heart of their midfield. City were prepared to go all in: a fee of €100 million was on the table in principle, the kind of number that usually starts a conversation.

This time, it ended one.

Pavlovic made it clear he had no intention of leaving Bayern for England. No flirting with the idea, no drawn-out saga. A categorical no. With that stance, City never even reached the stage of submitting an official offer.

The timing of their interest was striking. By spring, the decision had already been made behind the scenes at the Etihad: Pep Guardiola would step down, Enzo Maresca would come in. The Italian, fresh in the job and tasked with reshaping a side that had been built in Guardiola’s image, tried personally to lure Pavlovic. Direct contact, direct rejection. Maresca pushed; Pavlovic stood firm.

City’s response was ruthless. If they couldn’t have their first choice, they would rebuild the entire department.

What followed was a dramatic tearing down of one of Europe’s most dominant midfields. Rodri left for Barcelona. Bernardo Silva went to Real Madrid. Tijjani Reijnders moved on to Al-Qadsiah. Nico Gonzalez joined Newcastle. Four pillars of control, creativity and balance gone in one window, leaving a gaping hole at the core of Maresca’s new project.

For a long stretch of the summer, City had just one major midfield reinforcement lined up: Elliot Anderson, signed from Nottingham for €135 million. A bold move, but not nearly enough for a squad that had just lost so much experience and quality in the same zone.

The urgency grew as the deadline crept closer. City finally moved with the kind of financial muscle that has defined their recent eras. Ayyoub Bouaddi arrived from Lille for €95 million. Enzo Fernandez followed from Chelsea in a €145 million deal. Three new central midfielders, €375 million spent in that area alone, all in the shadow of the one player they never managed to bring through the door.

While City scrambled to reconstruct, Pavlovic stayed exactly where he wanted to be.

A product of Bayern’s academy, the midfielder broke through last season and quickly became a trusted figure in Munich. He made 44 competitive appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Those numbers only tell part of the story, but they underline how rapidly he embedded himself in the first team.

Germany took notice just as quickly. Pavlovic made his senior international debut in June 2024 and has already collected 15 caps. For a player still only 22, that kind of early trust from both club and country explains why he saw no reason to jump at City’s interest, no matter how flattering the fee or the project.

City move on with a rebuilt, eye-wateringly expensive midfield, tasked with replacing a generation of serial winners. Pavlovic, the one that got away, continues to grow at Bayern and with Germany.

If he keeps rising at this pace, the question won’t be why he turned City down, but how many more giants he will end up saying no to.
