Alejandro Balde’s Future at Barcelona: Liverpool Interest Grows

Alejandro Balde’s name keeps appearing on Hansi Flick’s team sheets. His boots, though, stay tied on the bench.

For a player once earmarked as Barcelona’s left-back for the next decade, the sudden stall is striking. Flick has turned instead to Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo on that flank, pushing Balde down to third in the pecking order and straight into the heart of the winter transfer conversation.

At Barça, Balde still carries weight inside the club. His contract runs to 2028, protected by a symbolic one-billion-euro release clause that screams “untouchable” even if the real market sees him closer to the 40-million bracket. On paper, he is part of the future. On the pitch, he is an afterthought.

That disconnect has alerted Europe’s elite.

Manchester United and Inter Milan already tested the waters in the summer, according to Sport, sensing opportunity in a young full-back with elite physical tools and Champions League experience. Now another heavyweight has stepped into the frame: Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola, Liverpool’s Spanish coach, views Balde as a potentially smart move — not a vanity signing, but a market opening that could reshape his left side for years. If the numbers line up, the interest is serious.

There is a pathway between the clubs. The recent loan of Ronald Araujo to Anfield showed how quickly Barcelona and Liverpool can get a deal over the line when both sides see value. Araujo has already justified the effort, imposing himself in England and shining in Europe, most notably with that audacious, decisive back-heel assist against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. One move worked. Another could follow the same route.

Balde, meanwhile, is stuck in a holding pattern. He trains, he waits, he hopes Flick cracks the door open again. Every session becomes an audition, every minor injury or rotation a potential lifeline. But the weeks tick by, and the rhythm of the season hardens around those ahead of him.

January Changes Everything

The winter window will force decisions on all sides: Barcelona, who must weigh their faith in Balde against Flick’s current hierarchy; Liverpool, who see a dynamic, attacking full-back tailored to the Premier League’s pace; and Jorge Mendes, the agent who specialises in turning stalled careers into fresh starts.

The Premier League looks a natural fit for Balde’s game — high tempo, big spaces, constant transitions. At 21, he needs more than promises and long contracts. He needs a pitch, a role, and a manager willing to live with his mistakes while polishing his upside.

If Barcelona can no longer offer that, someone else will. The only real question now is whether his next surge comes in a blaugrana shirt, or under the floodlights of Anfield in the heart of a title chase.
