Southend United Sign West Ham Defender Ryan Battrum on Loan

Southend United have moved to strengthen their right flank with the loan signing of West Ham United defender Ryan Battrum on a one-month deal.

The 21-year-old, who can also step into midfield, already knows Roots Hall from the other side of the touchline. He featured against Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July, a run-out that clearly left an impression on both player and club.

This time, he will have the home dressing room.

Battrum arrives with genuine enthusiasm for the move, drawn by the scale of the support Southend continue to command in the fifth tier. Crowds nudging 10,000 in the National League are no small pull for a young Premier League prospect looking for real, competitive minutes.

On the pitch, his arrival sharpens Kieron Dyer’s options in a side that has started with purpose. Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, beaten just once in seven games, and the manager has been vocal about building depth in key positions.

Right-Back Competition

Dyer now has exactly that at right-back. Vontae Daley-Campbell has impressed, but Battrum’s presence turns a solid position into a genuine battle. The West Ham loanee brings energy, power and strength, and his ability to step inside and operate as an inverted full-back fits neatly with Dyer’s tactical demands.

For a coach intent on having two strong contenders in every role, Battrum answers the brief.

The timing is no coincidence. Southend face Tamworth at home on Tuesday, and Battrum is available immediately, adding fresh legs and Premier League-schooled quality to a squad looking to turn a promising start into a sustained promotion push.
