Manchester United Sign Teenage Midfielder Isaac Konde from Liverpool

Manchester United have struck an agreement to sign 16-year-old Liverpool midfielder Isaac Konde, prising one of the Anfield club’s brightest academy prospects away from their rivals as part of an aggressive overhaul of their youth ranks.

The deal, reported by Fabrizio Romano, follows what is understood to be the completion of the formalities in the last 24 hours, clearing the way for Konde to move to Old Trafford. The teenager has featured six times for Liverpool in the Under-18 Premier League this season, registering one assist and catching the eye with his composure in midfield.

A 16-year-old swapping Liverpool red for United red is never a quiet story. It underlines how determined United are to restock their academy after a summer of churn – and how willing they are to move decisively when an opportunity appears in a rival’s backyard.

United reshape the academy

Konde’s arrival continues a trend. United’s youth department has been busy, but not only with signings. Several promising youngsters have departed in recent weeks, forcing the club to recalibrate its long-term planning.

Premier League champions Arsenal moved in to take Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon on permanent deals during the summer window, two exits that stung United’s academy staff and reduced depth in key positions.

Then came another departure. Louie Bradbury, a highly rated 17-year-old striker, left for Stoke City on a permanent basis, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year through the 2028/29 campaign. For a player who had been seen as one to watch in the age groups, it was a significant move.

United marked Bradbury’s exit with a detailed club statement. They highlighted his journey from Shrewsbury-born hopeful to academy regular, noting that he joined at Under-14s level and earned his scholarship with the club in 2025. He made five appearances for the Under-18s in the 2024/25 season, including a debut under Adam Lawrence in the FA Youth Cup fourth round, and followed that with eight goals in last season’s Under-18 Premier League while also featuring at Premier League 2 level.

The farewell was warm. The message from United was clear: gratitude for his progress, and best wishes as he steps into senior football at Stoke. But the subtext was just as clear – spaces were opening up, and they needed to be filled with the next wave of talent.

A market that never sleeps

United have not confined themselves to one talent pool. They pushed hard for Leicester City teenager Louis Page, a standout at League One level, in an attempt to add further quality to their youth ranks. That pursuit went right up to the deadline, only to collapse when the two clubs failed to agree terms in time. Page stayed at Leicester, and United were left to look elsewhere.

So the move for Konde arrives in that context: a club that has lost several prospects, missed out on another, and responded by targeting a technically gifted midfielder from their fiercest domestic rival.

For Liverpool, it is a blow. Konde had already worked his way into the Under-18s, contributing in the final third and showing enough promise to be trusted regularly at that level. For United, it is a calculated investment in a player they believe can grow in their system, one more piece in a longer-term rebuild of the pathway from academy to first team.

Konde will not solve United’s senior problems. That is not his job yet. But when a 16-year-old chooses to cross the divide between Liverpool and Manchester, it says something about where both clubs see opportunity, and about how ruthlessly the academy arms race is now being fought.
