Joe Gomez Returns for Liverpool's Carabao Cup Clash

Joe Gomez is poised to step back under the Anfield lights tonight, as Liverpool prepare to shuffle the pack for their Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham.

The England defender has not kicked a ball in anger this season after suffering a muscle strain in pre-season, but Andoni Iraola has cleared him to return for the third-round tie.

“Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play,” the Liverpool manager said on Monday, underlining that the final call will come down to minutes, not medical risk.

Gomez’s comeback is likely to headline a night of rotation. Iraola has already warned supporters to expect a different look.

“We will see tomorrow players we haven't seen,” he hinted, a clear signal that this competition will be used to broaden his options and test the depth of his squad.

That message will sound especially sweet to Wataru Endo. The Japan international has watched the early weeks of the campaign from the bench as an unused substitute, waiting for an opening in a crowded midfield. A domestic cup tie at home, with changes expected across the pitch, offers exactly the sort of platform he has been denied so far.

Youth, too, is pushing at the door. Rio Ngumoha, who impressed off the bench in the second half against Fulham, looks well placed for a first start of the season. His sharp cameo at the weekend did not go unnoticed, and a high-tempo cup tie could suit his fearless, direct style.

Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas are also in the conversation. Both have had tastes of senior action as substitutes; both now stand on the verge of their first starts of the campaign. Anfield has seen this story before: a cup night, a rotated XI, and a youngster grabbing the moment.

Yet Iraola may decide this is not just an audition for tomorrow, but a tune-up for the weeks ahead. If he leans towards experience, Bradley Barcola is an obvious beneficiary. The summer signing is in line for what would be a third start in seven days, a clear sign of trust and an attempt to accelerate his adaptation to Liverpool’s demands.

Up front, the options are thinner. With Hugo Ekitike still sidelined, Alexander Isak remains the only recognised senior centre-forward available. His presence gives the attack a focal point, but it also leaves Iraola one injury away from a serious problem.

Cody Gakpo offers a partial solution. Comfortable drifting in from wide areas or operating as a false nine, he can slot through the middle if required, giving Liverpool a different look in possession and another way to manage Isak’s workload.

So Anfield will see a blend: a returning international defender, a clutch of hungry youngsters, and new signings jostling for rhythm and relevance. For Gomez, it is a long-awaited restart. For several of his team-mates, it might be the night their season truly begins.
